When it comes to mindset and attitude Dylan is a master – we can’t help but admire his approach to his work and to his colleagues and peers. It’s an absolute pleasure to have him as an Alchemist!
We also think Dylan has some pretty sage advice for those looking to enter the construction industry today.
Having worked across boarders in countries such as New Zealand, London and now Australia, our gun of an Estimator Dylan began cutting his teeth in the construction industry as a Contract Administrator overseas before transitioning into Estimating and landing in Aus.
With worldly experience comes a wealth of knowledge and exposure to different construction practices and with this, Dylan has had the opportunity to work on a number of large-scale projects over his career, including the Melbourne Airport in Tullamarine.
We wanted to get to know Dylan a little better so we sat down and asked him a few hard-hitting questions – we certainly think his advice for his younger self and the construction myth the he’s busted are right on point!
What is your building of impact?
The Colosseum, its pure size and detail is incredible. Once you’re inside, your imagination runs wild with what it would have been like.
“Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, this will happen naturally, but make sure you always learn from each mistake.”
What has been the most memorable moment of your career in construction?
Going to work on the first day after landing a CA job in London. Travelling on the underground, wearing a suit, it was a bit different to what I was use to back home in New Zealand.
What’s a construction myth that you can bust?
That construction is only for men. Not true, we have a lot of women working here at Alchemy, and all of them are amazing at what they do. We need more women in the construction industry.
What is the one piece of advice you wish you had received in your early days of construction?
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, this will happen naturally, but make sure you always learn from each mistake.
What’s the best bit about your job?
Getting to work on such a variety of interesting projects, ranging from Schools, Hospitals, Sports Pavilions etc.
What makes you proud to work in the construction industry?
Seeing projects change people’s life for the better.
What’s something someone wouldn’t know about you?
