St John’s Regional College – Junior STEM Building - Alchemy Construct
Education

St John's Regional College

Modern and industrial elements are perfectly blended together to form the brand new St John’s Regional College double storey learning facility.

To assist in bringing this wonderful building to life, Alchemy worked to demolish and remove the existing structures, walls, roof, paving, hard landscaping and vegetation in specified areas of the school.

The project had an extremely tight timeframe and following engagement on a CM basis, our team was involved in ensuring the delivery of a quality fit out, working collaboratively with the consultants and trades on time.

Tarneit Community Learning Centre

The Tarneit Community Learning Centre redevelopment seeks to make better use of space for day-to-day learning activities, improve Council’s operations with new meeting and study rooms, acoustic operable walls, a new steel structural roof and effective separation of ‘noisy’ and ‘quiet’ activity zones.

The scope involved some significant civil and landscape works over three different areas including new paving, greenery and hedging. Agricultural irrigation was installed, as well as bollard lighting and architectural gates and fences. Since the centre is joined to a library and kindergarten, Alchemy Construct was tasked to carefully plan and execute works in conjunction with the library and childcare operators to make sure their business operations continued in the immediate vicinity of our construction activities.

Monash University Building S L8/9 ACJC Fit-Out

Alchemy Construct were engaged to complete the office refurbishment of Monash Caulfield Building S, Levels 8 and 9 for the Faculty of Business and Economics.

The works were undertaken in a live environment with tenants occupying both floors, so great care was taken to co-ordinate with the client and stakeholders throughout the tight time-line.

Alchemy demonstrated flexibility and adaptability within the program of works, sequencing works to minimise impact to ongoing business operations.

Level 8’s refurbishment consisted of a two-stage open-plan office refurbishment, new kitchen space, conference room, cutting edge AV/video conference facilities, meeting room, break out space, toilet refresh and lift lobby refurbishment.

RMIT Makerspace

RMIT’s Interior Design students were invited as part of their course work to take part in a design competition aimed at providing the New Academic Street (NAS) project with a purpose-built “Makers Space” within the City campus Library. This gave students design influence on the NAS project and exposed them to industry experts from Lyons Architecture and Schiavello Interiors.

The winner, Keira Kailun Wu, was awarded an internship with industry giants Lyons Architecture. The fitout was split over two levels and the space was designed for students to be able to work collaboratively on models and allow development of ideas and concepts, together with 3D printing technology.

Doug Ellis Swimming Pool Monash University

The Doug Ellis pool works entailed an initial demolition of the wall and floor tiles, membrane and render from the lap pool and adjacent leisure pool. Works were undertaken while the adjacent variable floor pool remained fully operational, as well as working around mid-year examinations in the nearby Sports Hall.

The University took the opportunity to remove the “tongue” from the leisure pool and re-align the southern wall, relocating the lifting hoist and replacing lane rope anchors. Alchemy Construct provided input for an alternative design of the scum gutters to permit ease of ongoing maintenance, and a ‘wet-deck’ profile was adopted to the southern and northern sides. Similarly, custom-fabricated glass reinforced panels were installed to the leisure pool, and the balance tank re-lined to ensure longevity, addressing the detrimental effect of the harsh chemical treatment in the pool environment.

The Alchemy team ensured all works were managed sympathetic to the ongoing business operations in the immediate vicinity. Proactive and technically sound measures were implemented to overcome the substantial latent conditions encountered.

Monash University Sports Building & Games Room

A fun, engaging and ‘break-away’ space for students.

Alchemy Construct was engaged to manage a new build within the existing external courtyard in the heart of the Monash Sports Centre to create a fun, engaging and ‘break-away’ space for students. The Games Room comprises billiard tables, arcade machines, dart boards, board games, video games, a foosball table and air hockey table.

Access was a major constraint on this project, given the extended hours of operations at the centre, so Alchemy meticulously planned delivery of material and removal of significant earth spoil. Strict safety measures were enforced for the structural steel and roofing work crane lifts in the immediate vicinity of both pedestrians and vehicles along Scenic Boulevard.

Malcolm Graham Pavilion

The City of Yarra’s redevelopment of the Malcolm Graham Pavilion sought to encourage and enhance participation of females in sport and active recreation by specifically delivering modern gender-neutral change rooms with some really robust finishes.

The refurbishment to the existing pavilion included an upgrade of two player change rooms, public toilets and minor works to the social room, kitchen and laundry. The construction of a new adjoining building included two additional change rooms, a referee’s room, a first aid room and covered spectator area. It also required significant sewer works associated with replacement of the existing septic tank that provides grey water irrigation to the wider reserve. ESD aspects included use of low-cement concrete, new water-efficient fixtures and fittings, efficient light fittings and ground works management to avoid adulterating a potentially contaminated soil on a reclaimed site.

Health

Monash University Pharmacy Teaching Space

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences refurbishment on Level 1 of the Scott Building created six, flat-floor, 30-capacity teaching spaces to support a new vertical double-degree. The main thoroughfares were converted to glazed walls with feature film to promote engagement across the rooms. Inter-connectivity of the rooms added to the interactive and collaborative nature of the learning space.

An initial demolition and strip-out of the space encountered numerous latent conditions that Alchemy Construct was able to overcome with pro-active input, proposed services and architectural solutions, whilst still meeting the original construction programme with its ‘non-negotiable’ completion date.
